Watch What It Looks Like To Force-Feed Detainees At Guantánamo Bay Prison

WARNING: The point of this video is to illuminate an extremely disturbing process.

As many as 40 detainees at Guantánamo Bay Prison are currently engaged in a hunger strike to protest their continued confinement. Rather than letting the strikers die, the U.S. government, as it has on and off for nearly a decade, force-feeds the prisoners using a standard procedure that the UN Human Rights Commission has called torture. The detainees’ lawyers have tried to stop the feeding but the Department of Justice argues that federal courts have no jurisdiction to do so.

To illuminate the procedure — which is only conducted in the evenings to follow the dictates of the Islamic holiday of Ramadan — the UK human rights group Reprieve had rapper Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) experience a force-feeding for a film directed by BAFTA Award-winning director Asif Kapadia.

In April, President Obama renewed his call for the closing of Guantánamo Bay Prison. In June, the House voted 236 to 188 to ban the president from transferring the detainees from Guantánamo Bay.
